Mawuena Gagakuma is a senior consultant with over 18 years of professional experience spanning investment and commercial banking, risk management, organizational development, strategic management, insolvency practice, financial advisory, and health insurance consultancy.
He has led and delivered assignments in collective investment scheme design, trustee and fund administration, transaction and financial advisory, enterprise risk management, project development, corporate finance, and organizational restructuring across multiple sectors, including banking, energy, and public-sector institutions.
In addition, Mawuena has extensive experience in the health insurance space, having worked as a consultant on multiple health insurance–related projects and as a Scheme Agent licensed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). His work in this area includes advisory support, operational assessments, and governance-related engagements within Ghana’s health insurance ecosystem.
He began his career with Linklaters in London as a paralegal and subsequently worked with Legal & General Investment Management in the City of London as a fund administrator. After returning to Ghana in 2009, he joined Merchant Bank (now UMB), where he held several roles, culminating in his appointment as Market Risk Manager. From 2016 to 2018, he served as Risk Team Leader at the defunct Sovereign Bank Limited.
Mawuena is a seasoned facilitator and has delivered training in risk management and organizational development at the National Banking College and through in-house programs for financial institutions, private enterprises, and state-owned entities.
His consultancy portfolio includes transaction advisory, strategy formulation, feasibility studies, ERM system implementation, board and governance evaluations, and sector-specific risk assessments for private entities and SOEs in Ghana and Liberia. Notable engagements include financial modelling for GIZ energy efficiency projects, risk scoping for the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and human rights risk assessments for Aker Energy and a large-scale agricultural plantation.
He also brings deep expertise in insolvency and restructuring, having participated in high-profile liquidation assignments exceeding USD 25 million and advisory engagements for major national financial institutions.
Mawuena holds a BA in Economics and Management from the University of Ghana and an MBA from Purdue University, USA. He is a Certified Risk-Based Auditor, a certified Risk Management Professional (IABFM, USA; GARP, USA), an Insolvency Practitioner, and a member of the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA).
